Poungru(風樓) - naturally forced, essentially formed

Wind force not only generates electricity, it also changes and reforms our views of space and the environment.

Jeju Island, Korea is famous for its windy weather. There are a number of wind mills that generate power and distributes it to the people. As you can see, the wind is a useful natural resource. The Poungru project not only sees the wind as a source of energy, but it also explores how the wind influences our views and the environment. This project was done in collaboration with Nameless Architect and Energy Research Center in 2013.

[Process]

Project condition : choose one of the given sites, use wind force data, and develop a permanent pavilion. First we spot the location of where people hike casually. We then come up with two ideas:

- view point
- resting space

concept _01. Wind, Scenery

This installation has two walls; the front having panels and the back filled with rocks. Panels at the front rotate according to the wind. This movement of panels generates power to rotate the poles on the back wall, which have rocks on them. As a result, it frames the sea, sky, and road all in one, and is continuously changed by the wind.

- "Wind, Scenery" sketch. Panels are on the left, stones are on the right.

concept _02. Wind, space

Strong winds destroy everything and light breezes help spread seeds. We call it nature law.
This second idea is about creating a space that is transformed by the force of the wind. With heavy winds, the installed mechanic system on top of the pavillion drops down and closes the space. With a light breeze, the pulley goes up and opens up the space. The process is similar to the pulling and posting of flags.

- "Wind, Space" sketch. The pulley goes up and down.

[Final installation]

After many discussions and meetings, we decided to develop the first idea, Wind and Scenery.
Because the site is outdoors without power, maintenance is the primary issue.
