   Mobile Traffic Data Visualization

After the popularization of the smartphone, the way we consume data and producing actions have changed.

“Are we behaving properly with the new device in our hands?"
"How can we determine what constitutes proper or improper behavior?”
Define proper and improper behavior.

[Facts]

This visualization illustrates South Korean mobile traffic from 2010 to 2012. At the start of this period, Koreans adopted smartphone use quickly with data usage jumping from approximately 10% of total traffic usage, to 90% within three months. This unexpected rapid growth caused traffic delays, and the extremely heavy users (less than 10% of total users) were responsible for almost 60% of the total data traffic consumption. With the increase of data traffic came a decrease in voice and SMS traffic. Our main method of communication has shifted from “talking” to “reading and talking.”

[Questions]

After visualizing the raw data provided by SK Telecom, we conducted interviews with randomly selected people on their thoughts on the big change.

- Are you aware of the changes brought on by smartphones?
- If you are not a smartphone user, do you feel you are not adapted to this new era?
- If you are a smartphone user, how have you been changed by it?
- I once saw a family at a cafe who didn’t talk to each other for hours, and spent the entire time on their smartphones. Should this be considered abnormal or become the lifestyle which we should be accustomed to?

The increase of data usage brings changes in our behavior in terms of communication and lifestyle. (or Increment changes of data usage indicates changes in our behavior in terms of communication and lifestyle.) It could also bring about unexpected changes in the future that we cannot predict in the present day.

Knowing what we know now, our next step would be to manage how we deal with the changes to have a positive impact on our lives.
